Some series are announced long in advance, others appear completely unexpectedly. The second case has now occurred according to Deadline, which reports that a Series remake of Carrie – Satan’s Youngest Daughter is in progress.
After the debut novel by horror author Stephen King has already been filmed several times, this will be the first series adaptation of the material. And from a celebrated horror genius behind the camera.
Stephen King remake: Celebrated Netflix series creator remakes Carrie for Amazon
In 1974, Stephen King published his first book, laying the foundation for his long horror career. Just two years later, Brian De Palma filmed the dark coming-of-age story shy teenager Carrie White (Sissy Spacek): She suffers from her strict religious mother, is bullied at school and finally discovers her telekinetic abilities – which she unleashes at the prom.
The first 70s film adaptation of Carrie received a sequel in 1999 with Carrie 2 – The Revenge. In addition, the story was brought to the stage as a musical in 1988 and the remakes Carrie (2002) on TV and Carrie (2013) in the cinema tried to reinterpret it. That means, if you exclude the sequel, they already exist four versions of the story and the series will be the fifth reboot.
This was initiated new, eight-episode series Carrie by none other than Horror genius Mike Flanagan. Based on a template by Stephen King, Flanagan already directed the Shining sequel Doctor Sleeps Awakening. He also created the five Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House (2018), The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020), Midnight Mass (2021), Goosebumps at Midnight (2022) and The Fall of the House of Usher (2023). He is now the showrunner of the Carrie series and also produces it alongside Trevor Macy.
When is the Carrie series coming to Amazon?
Since series planning is still at the very beginning, a start date has not yet been set. We expect the end of 2025 at the earliest, sooner 2026 with Carrie’s Return on Amazon Prime Video.
Last year, a deal between Mike Flanagan and Netflix ended, meaning the filmmaker can now pursue new projects elsewhere. What the new horror series brings to Flanagan’s other Stephen King project Amazon, The Dark Towermeans, is currently unclear. It sounds as if Carrie is putting herself in the fast lane and is already assembling a team of screenwriters – even before the series adaptation of King’s great work.
