The Historic Downtown Chatham Business Improvement Association put out a call for artists to make submissions for a mural project to renew the large space on River Rock Social House building at King Street and Fourth Street.
“The current murals are now 25 years old and we are grateful to have had this piece of history in the community for this long,” said a BIA media release.
The organization thanked lead artist Penelope Duchesne and her team and the chamber of commerce for working together on the existing murals.
“However, we are excited to unveil a new, modern theme on the side of the River Rock building,” the BIA said.
Digital submissions are being sought from across Canada to place three new murals in the space with the theme: Inspire community pride through the exploration of our history and heritage within Chatham.

Artists can submit up to three original works with the three winning submission to be digitally printed and installed on the building at 187 King St. W.
“We’re proud to share that this method is more accessible, allowing artists with different capabilities, specialties and from different areas, the opportunity to participate,” the BIA said.
The winning artists will receive $2,000 and a plaque below their work with their name, the name of their work and a QR code to their social media/website. The murals and plaques will stay up for at least the next five years, with the unveiling happening on the 2025 RetroFest weekend.
A five-person panel will review the submissions “to pick the best fit for this area and we will be prioritizing local artists’ work,” the BIA said.
The deadline for submissions is Jan. 30. Details on making a submission can be found at www.downtownchatham.com/events/call-for-entry-2025-mural-project.
