The European sci-fi crime series Concordia – Deadly Utopia examines the murder of a young man and its impact on a very special community in six episodes. Because in the Swedish town of Concordia, everything is seamlessly monitored and regulated by artificial intelligence (AI). This should lead to a pain-free life for all residents.
By episode 6 at the latest, however, it becomes clear that Concordia’s senior management has blood on their hands. It’s not the AI that’s evil here, it’s the people. We explain the resolution and what that means open ending could mean for a second season.
The Ending of Concordia Explained: Oliver was murdered because he knew the big secret
Concordia was built on blood: In the finale of Concordia – Deadly Utopia, a dark truth emerges. Juliane Ericksen (Christiane Paul) was only able to found the totally monitored city of Concordia 20 years ago because a student’s rampage had recently shaken the city. Juliane’s partner at the time, Dr. Peter Blom had the same dream of Concordia and consciously drove his unstable patient Jesper to this same rampage.
Frightened, the residents finally agreed to complete surveillance. Juliane knew about Peter’s misguided ambitions at the time and did nothing about it. The AI developer AJ Oba (Kento Nakajima) made the incriminating video material disappear in exchange for a seat on the board, which is why no one ever found out about it – until Concordia was hacked.
Oliver revealed the secret and died for it: The murder victim from episode 1, Oliver Miller, managed to hack Concordia’s AI 20 years later. He used it to spy on and stalk young women before a date. Ultimately, he also learned the truth about the rampage at the time. He turns to Juliane’s son Noah Ericksen (Steven Sowah). Instead of helping Oliver, or exposing his mother’s actions and helping Concordia have a better future, he orders Oliver’s murder. To tidy up all the loose ends, he also brings in Dr. Peter Blom kills it himself and makes it look like suicide.
The perpetrators are not convicted: Oliver’s actual murderer is Noah’s henchman Adrian “The Brit” Grant (Peter Seaton-Clark). He dies in a firefight with the leader of the terrorist organization Faceless, who are framed for Oliver’s murder. In the end, Juliane and Noah know all the dirty details about each other and keep quiet. But crisis manager Thea Ryan (Ruth Bradley) and Noah’s friend and Concordia employee Isabelle Larsson (Nanna Blondell) also know about it, but for different reasons see no point in going public with it.
More about the series:
How could Concordia continue in season 2?
So far there has been no official talk of a second season. However, episode 6 ends on the bitter note that the murders have no negative consequences for the senior management of Concordia and the AI concept of politician Hanna Bremer (Karoline Eichhorn) rolled out to the German town of Kopwitz becomes. So season 2 could only be loosely related to the first and focus on a different problem in a different AI city.
In the final shots of episode 6 we see a few impressive looks – from Juliane, Noah and Isabelle – but we don’t know what they are seeing. Juliane looks at the sky, Isabelle at a screen and Noah at an AI surveillance camera. It can be interpreted as an ominous suggestion that Oliver’s murder was not finally swept under the carpet is. The second season could also pick up here and convict the perpetrators and examine the effects on Concordia.
An exciting approach for a second season would also be one bigger leap into the futurewhich examines further advantages as well as problems and gaps of the AI concept in two or more cities. Because the focus on the AI itself is definitely neglected in the first season.
