Moldova’s pro-EU president Maia Sandu said the EU referendum result was an attack on Moldova’s freedom and democracy.
“Moldova has faced an unprecedented attack on the freedom and democracy of our country, both today and in recent months,” Sandu told reporters in the country’s capital, Chișinău.
About 54 percent had voted against EU membership, when about 90 percent of the votes had been counted.
According to Sandu, the result was influenced by “criminal groups in cooperation with foreign hostile forces”. In the past, Sandu, like several other Moldovan parties, has accused Russia of trying to influence Moldova’s elections. Moldovan authorities suspect that up to a quarter of the voters had been tried to be influenced with Russian money.
