At least seven dead after a drawbridge collapses in the US state of Georgia | News in brief

In the United States, at least seven people have died in a bridge accident in Georgia, state officials say.

The accident happened local time on Saturday on Sapelo Island, when the drawbridge leading to the ferry dock collapsed. Several people were taken to the hospital from the scene of the accident and the rescue authorities are searching for survivors in the water.

The cause of the bridge accident is not yet clear, the authorities say. There were at least 20 people on the drawbridge at the time of the accident.

Sapleo Island is located about 100 kilometers south of the city of Savannah. The island can only be reached by water from the continental United States.
