Mats Sundin refuses to be part of the TV program Mästarnas mästara

Mats Sundin is one of Swedish hockey’s foremost.
He would therefore be a given candidate for “Master of Masters”.
But now the icon reveals why he refuses to appear in the celebrated SVT program.

He has had an absolutely brilliant career as one of Swedish hockey’s great giants. Mats Sundin has won an Olympic gold medal, three World Cup gold medals, was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame as the second Swede after Börje Salming and had a statue erected in his honor in Toronto.

Sundin’s career

“Sudden”, as he is known, played a full 18 seasons in the NHL and delivered an incredible 1,349 points in 1,346 games. It is still the most points of any Swedish hockey player of all time and that says a lot about Sundin’s greatness.

But unfortunately, we haven’t seen the Tre Kronor icon in very many public contexts after the active playing career. Mats admits that the acclaimed SVT program “Master of Masters” has asked him several times – but he has refused time and time again.

Mats declines

Now Sundin reveals why he refuses to be part of the TV program where former athletes compete against each other. When asked if he would be in Master of Masters or Masked singer, he even chooses the latter option.
– Haha, then I’ll probably say Masked singer. The children have asked several times, but I probably won’t be there. But if I had to choose something, I’ll take it, he says in a television interview with Aftonbladet.

The reason is he cannot do himself justice anymore in the physical competitions.
– I have said no quite a few times. I won’t be fooled there now. I have realized that it looks very lovely in those places. But when you collect these winning skulls that don’t want to lose, then there is a lot of competition. I have realized my limitations physically and mentally. You probably won’t see me there, Sundin said in “Halv tre med Lotta Bromé” on Mix Megapol earlier.

But we probably won’t see Mats Sundin in Masked singer in the near future either.
– It won’t happen! But it was very funny, before I heard a scream from the TV room. Then someone from the jury had guessed Mats Sundin and my children sat and watched the programme. Then my children came running; “is that you dad?”. Then I said: “Yes, maybe it is,” he said in the radio interview.
– The children don’t perceive me as father Mats the ice hockey player, but father Mats who was almost in “Masked singer”.
