A mother is suspected of having slit her daughter’s throat. She is known to the police for acts of Islamic radicalization.
On October 11, the police were contacted by the Muslim funeral directors of Mulhouse, who had just been asked by a 44-year-old woman to bury her 19-year-old daughter. However, the mother was reportedly unable to present a death certificate, which prompted the funeral directors to notify the authorities, according to France Blue Alsace.
The police then discovered the “victim who was lying on the ground in his room wrapped in a sheet”, according to Jean-François Assal, deputy public prosecutor of Mulhouse, reports The Parisian. The victim had 16 wounds, including one deep on the neck. These injuries would probably have been “caused by a bladed weapon”, in particular a ceramic knife was found on site. According to the autopsy, the victim would have had her throat slit and would have tried to protect herself, given the defense marks. “We are on the verge of decapitation,” said the Mulhouse prosecutor’s office given the violence of the scene.
His mother is then the main suspect. She was placed in police custody, but following a psychiatric opinion, she was deemed incapable of remaining there. The suspect was then hospitalized under duress. An investigation for “murder by ascendant” is opened. The suspect can only be questioned once compulsory hospitalization has been lifted.
A mother known for acts of Islamic radicalization
The motive for the alleged murder remains unknown, but the mother’s profile has caught the attention of law enforcement. The latter is “strongly Islamized”, according to the prosecutor. In police custody, she refused to communicate other than in Arabic, even though she was born in France and studied there. She also reportedly devoted her life to religion, even muttering prayers when police arrived at her home. Furthermore, the forty-year-old is not unknown to the police, appearing in intelligence service files for acts of Islamic radicalization since 2019.
The victim was, for his part, out of school. The young woman was followed by a children’s judge in order to get her out of her “very strict vision of Islam”, according to France Blue Alsace. It is currently impossible to know whether this family context played a role in the tragedy which occurred in Mulhouse.
