In Sweden, for an accused to be found guilty of rape, the prosecution must now prove that there is “absence of consent” from the victim, a concept which does not yet exist in French law. Rape convictions in Sweden increased by 75% to 333 in 2019, up from 190 in 2017, according to a 2020 progress report from the National Crime Prevention Council, a year after the law was put in place.
