“The item disappeared before my eyes”

There is currently a lot of discussion about item trading in Diablo 4. A player tried to exchange his gold for an item, but before he knew it, the item he wanted had disappeared before his eyes. Now he warns other players of the same fate.

How did the scam work? User Sp3rMi describes his experience with the scam on Reddit. He met a Chinese player to trade and wanted to exchange a 4GA Kepeleke staff for 15 billion gold. The deal went through and the players went their separate ways.

However, 10 seconds later, the Reddit user’s staff disappeared from his inventory without a trace. The item was gone and so was the 15 billion gold. Now the player on Reddit is warning other fans about this scam and declaring it as “trade hacking”. Even if this seemed like a dubious practice, there is an interesting system behind it from Blizzard, which is intended to protect the market of a current season.

The system is also available in Diablo 2

What kind of system is this? The practice known as “trade hacking” is actually a system to protect the market in Diablo. Even in Diablo 2 there were players who liked to duplicate strong items in order to sell them more often for a lot of gold. Blizzard saw this as a problem and came up with something.

The solution to the problem, explains user Albinator_ on Reddit, was to give each unique item an ID. If you then tried to duplicate that item, the system would recognize a duplicate and then let the item evaporate in the trade or if you dropped it. In theory, the crook cannot make any profit from it.

In the case of Sp3rMi, things went badly because the system couldn’t intervene quickly to protect the injured party. Now he is left with a loss and therefore has no hope of seeing the item or his gold again.

How can I see through such a scam? To prevent the same thing from happening to you, players on Reddit advise letting the item you want to trade drop for a while to see if it disappears into thin air.

If so, you have recognized the fraud, if not, you can trade without concerns. In this case, don’t let yourself be pressured into a quick barter and take your time. If you do it too quickly, you could be the next injured party to be left with the costs.
