This is the best place to live – when the climate changes

Increasingly drier – and increasingly wetter. The weather will do it on an ever larger scale throughout the world in step with climate change.

– As Sweden becomes warmer, drier and wetter, the pace of climate adaptation must be increased in all parts of society. The time when it was possible to get away with measures to reduce the effects of climate change is over, says Per Sangrud, head of sustainability at Länsförsäkringar Fastighetsförmedling, in a press release.

They have produced an index that ranks all of the country’s municipalities to see where it is best to live from a climate perspective. And it is Piteå in Norrbotten that ends up in first place. At the bottom, however, is Östhammar’s municipality in Uppsala.

The parameters looked at are statistics on natural damage, how far the municipalities have come in the work with climate adaptation and community planning and to what extent the residents use green tax deductions to reduce the climate impact of their homes.

Political solutions are needed

The report is a picture of the current situation as well as what the Swedes themselves think and what they do on their own to reduce the climate footprint of their home.

– Those who own their home naturally have their own responsibility to protect their home when the climate changes, but it will also require comprehensive solutions from a political perspective. The government’s strategy for climate adaptation places a great deal of responsibility on the municipalities, which must now raise the level of ambition considerably, says Per Sangrud.
