Only 15 goalies have scored in the NHL.
Last night, Swedish Minnesota goalkeeper Filip Gustavsson’s name was included on the list.
– I don’t know what to say, it just happened, he says in ESPN.
Throughout history, a total of 18 goals have been scored by 15 different goalkeepers in the NHL. Linus Ullmark was the first Swede to do so when he scored the 3-1 goal for the Boston Bruins against the Vancouver Canucks in February 2023. Now suddenly there is another Swede on the list.
Celebrated by teammates
In tonight’s game between the Minnesota Wild and the St. Louis Blues, the Minnesotans threw Philip Gustavsson26, off a puck toward the empty opposing goal on the power play and with nine seconds left to play. It slipped into the cage and 4-1 was a fact.
– I don’t know what to say, it just happened. Fleury (goalie colleague Marc-Andre Fleury) urged me as I passed the booth during the timeout preceding the goal that I should take the chance. We had a two-goal lead, explains the shocked goalscorer in ESPN after the match.

When the final whistle sounded, his teammates came forward and celebrated him heartily. Inside the dressing room, they sprayed him with water and there was a wild party to celebrate the former Luleå keeper, who also belonged to the Ottawa Senators.
Better than McDavid and Matthews
Now Gustavsson has also succeeded in something that Connor McDavid and Austin Matthews failed so far this season… to score. He also has more power play goals scored than the Anaheim Ducks, Carolina Hurricanes, Toronto Maple Leafs and Buffalo Sabers combined. Which of course is incomparable in itself!
After the match, Filip Gustavsson joked a little about his own skill when it comes to playing in the power play.
– Now I should probably be called to the meetings we have about our power play in the future, he said in ESPN with a twinkle in his eye.

In addition to being responsible for a goal himself, the Swede also saved 27 pucks. But it was remarkably not enough to be chosen as player of the match. His Russian colleague Kirill Kaprizov made two assists which apparently ranked higher.
This is absolutely incredible, what a wonderful performance. Quite right to conclude, Filip!
Now you have truly entered the history books and will forever be associated with this goal.
