Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Egypt on Wednesday evening, October 18, reported the official Irna agency, an unprecedented visit to this country in nearly 12 years for a head of Iranian diplomacy.

This trip comes at a time when Iran is increasing diplomatic consultations to try to ease regional tensions, after strikes against Israel on October 1 which now raise fears of reprisals.
The last visit to Egypt by a head of Iranian diplomacy dates back to January 2013 when Ali Akbar Salehi visited Cairo.
Iran increases diplomatic initiatives
Before going to Cairo, the head of Iranian diplomacy Abbas Araghchi was in Jordan this Wednesday as part of a regional tour.
Iran launched 200 missiles at Israel on October 1, including several hypersonic missiles for the first time. These strikes were presented by Tehran as retaliation forassassination in July in the Iranian capital of Palestinian Hamas leader Ismaïl Haniyehattributed to Israel. Iran says it also acted in response to the death of an Iranian general in a strike in Lebanon as well as Hassan Nasrallah, who led Lebanese Hezbollah for more than 30 yearssupported financially and militarily by Iran.
Israel has vowed to make Iran pay the price for its attack.

The Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs has since multiplied diplomatic initiatives.
He successively visited Lebanon, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Iraq and Oman, which usually serves as an intermediary for indirect talks with the United States.
Tuesday evening, Abbas Araghchi spoke with his French counterpart Jean-Noël Barrot and the Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, according to Tehran.
After Egypt, he will then leave for Turkey, announced his supervisory ministry.
