Emil Lundström about the grief after his father

Emil’s father was shot dead in Brussels • “Murdered by someone who was sick in the head”

Brussels terrorist Abdesalem Lassoued, 45, opened fire with an automatic weapon at Sainctelette Square in Brussels shortly before Sweden’s European Championship qualifier against Belgium last year.

Swede Patrick Lundström, 60, was one of the victims of the terrorist attack that shook the world. He lived with his family in Switzerland and was described as a happy person who loved his wife, children and grandchildren.

A year later after the brutal act, son Emil Lundström is back at the place where his father died.

– It doesn’t really matter if he was a terror victim or not. He was murdered by someone who was sick in the head. I don’t care if it was a terrorist attack or not, he says to TV4 Nyheterna.

Working year: “Feel bad”

Emil describes a difficult year that has passed and he says that it felt like he needed to come to the place where a memorial ceremony was held on Wednesday.

– I feel now… It feels bad all the time, he says.

In attendance were, among others, Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Belgium’s Prime Minister Alexander De Croo. In pictures, you can see how Kristersson lays down a large wreath and that there are a lot of people who want to show their sympathies.

– It is incredibly sad in every conceivable way. At the same time, it’s nice to be back. It’s nice to meet the family of one of those who were killed and to talk to them about how their lives look a year later. Time does not heal all wounds, but time gives some distance and perspective, says the Prime Minister after the ceremony.

Had no contact with the government

Emil says that he has had conversations with both the Prime Minister of Belgium and with Ulf Kristersson during the day – but they didn’t say anything special there.

But previously he has had no contact with the Swedish government and Emil wants nothing from them.

– They have certainly done their thing, but not for us, he says.
