On Wednesday, the Japanese government warned of “escalation” on the Korean peninsula, after North Korea blew up roads and railways on the South Korean border on Tuesday.

The explosions have been considered mostly symbolically significant, as the roads connecting the countries were not in use before the explosions. South Korea responded to the explosions by firing warning shots at the border and raising the readiness of its armed forces.

The Japanese government warns that Tuesday’s events could further increase tensions between the Koreas.

– Our government is doing everything it can to collect, analyze and monitor the necessary information about future developments in North Korea, Deputy General Secretary of the Japanese Government Kazuhiko Aoki commented on Wednesday.

Inter-Korean tensions have recently flared up, and North Korea has severed its last remaining ties with South Korea in recent months.

On Friday, North Korea claimed that South Korea had sent drones over its capital, Pyongyang. According to North Korea, the drones would have distributed leaflets against the North Korean regime.

South Korea’s armed forces have not agreed to comment on the drone claim.
