New regulations will heavily penalize motorists who still use this type of tire after November 1st.
You only have a few days left to check your tires. Because from 1er November, those which equip your car may no longer be compliant. This has nothing to do with their wear, driving with tires that are too smooth has long been considered an offense and punishable by a fine. No, this time it is a type of tire which will become compulsory for driving on certain roads. This regulation will apply all winter, more precisely from 1er November 2024 to March 31, 2025.
Since its entry into force in 2021, the Mountain Law stipulates that you must equip your vehicle with winter tires, all-season tires or, failing that, have removable equipment such as chains or snow socks to be able to drive on the roads of many municipalities located in 34 French departments. This winter again, the police will be required to carry out prevention but will not be able to fine users who are not in compliance. However, tires that were once permitted will no longer be permitted next month, and anyone who circumvents the ban will risk a fine.
If your car’s tires are marked M+ S (for Mud and Snow) or 4S (for 4 seasons), be aware that you will be outlawed if you drive in a large part of the mountain ranges. (Pyrenees, Alps, Massif Central, Vosges, Jura, Corsica) between November and March although they are more suitable for mountain driving than standard tires. Only tires stamped 3PMSF (Three Peak Mountain Snow Flake), symbol of more rigorous approval guaranteeing better performance on snow, ice and black ice, will be in compliance with the Mountain law.
To recognize them, nothing could be easier: they have a logo in the shape of three mountain peaks and a snowflake on the side of your tires. In a few days, any vehicle that enters one of the many areas affected by the Mountain law – indicated by B58 signs representing mountains, a tire and a suitcase – will therefore have to be fitted with 3PMSF tires.
Otherwise, the law provides for a fine of 135 euros and the possibility for the police to immobilize the car. You know what you have to do if you plan to go to the mountains in the coming weeks, or simply if you live there.
