Risk of being cheated out of money

Earlier in the year, the Swedish Transport Agency has several times issued warnings to Swedish motorists that someone may try to cheat them out of money.

The warnings were about the circulation of fake emails whose senders pretend to be the Swedish Transport Agency, but in fact want to cheat car owners out of money.

Now there has been a new wave of scam emails, according to Advice & Opinion.

Demand for payment

The emails are designed as demands for payment of fees for wrong parking, for example, and the sender appears to be the Swedish Transport Agency.

An email can say that “you have received a fine for illegal parking”, and that you can be “forced to submit the violation to court” if payment is not made on time.

The messages also contain OCR numbers and due dates, as well as links to a payment page.

Risk of being cheated out of money

In fact, the emails are a way for fraudsters to cheat Swedish motorists out of money.

The Swedish Transport Agency is therefore now warning about these emails with a message on its website.

“Right now fake emails are circulating where the sender pretends to be the Swedish Transport Agency. The email has not been sent out from us. Never click on links that invite you to disclose personal and financial information,” it reads.

The tip from the Swedish Transport Agency

The Swedish Transport Agency has previously, among other things, warned about the scam email at the end of July this year, via Sekerhetskollen.se.

Then it was also advised that there is a simple way to check whether one’s own vehicle in fact has any debts, namely to use the e-service Debts of the vehicle.

In the Vehicle debts service, you can log in with e-identification, and see payment information for vehicle tax, congestion tax, infrastructure fee and incorrect parking fee.

In addition to using the service to check whether a payment claim is correct, the Swedish Transport Agency recommends that you use the service in connection with the purchase of a used vehicle.
