Finnish hockey is shaken by the terrible thing that has happened. On Monday, it is reported that the hockey player Janne Puhakka has been found dead in his home, he was only 29 years old.

Puhakka broke new ground when he dared to come out as gay and became Finland’s first openly gay hockey player. But now the shock news has arrived.

Finland is in mourning following the reports that Puhakka was allegedly shot dead in his home in Espoo on Sunday evening. The newspaper Iltalehti writes that Finnish police have arrested Janne’s 66-year-old husband and suspect him of the murder.
– We have a reasonably good understanding of what has happened, says the investigator Matti Högman to the newspaper Ilta-Sanomat, but does not want to confirm the identities of either the victim or the suspect.

The late Janne Puhakka ended his hockey career in 2018 and his last club was Gap in France. He has also played for Finnish hockey clubs Blues and Espoo.
He became an important role model and pioneer for many young gay athletes in Finland, having dared to show his great courage in a macho-dominated sport like hockey.

Puhakka also became a television profile in his home country and was one of the participants in Finland’s version of the Swedish program “The Traitors”. Where Janne made it all the way to the final, but now the production company announces that they will not televise the final program due to his passing.
