Väinö Mäkelä finished fifth in the last frisbee golf major of the season, the US Open Championship (USDGC) in South Carolina.
Väinö Mäkelän four even-par rounds and a combined score of 28 under par was enough for fifth at the final frisbee golf major of the season, the US Open Championship (USDGC) in South Carolina.
Mäkelä went to Sunday’s climax from fourth place, so he played in the lead group. Even though the ranking fell and the podium was four throws away, the athlete was satisfied with his performance.
– I am proud that I endured the pressure of the final day. A couple of stupid mistakes cost the podium, Mäkelä told STT.
The best major tournament of his career crowns Mäkelä’s, 25, up-and-coming season. Spring and early summer were slow, but a brave change of puck sponsor brought a life-saving boost.
Even if the technology works on all frisbee golf balls in the world, there is no guarantee how quickly the thrower will adapt to the new manufacturer’s specimens. However, Mäkelä’s previous partnership had lasted about 10 years.
– Sometimes you have to make difficult choices to turn your sports career around. When it bears fruit, it makes the mind happy.
– If those changes hadn’t happened, I would be mentally exhausted.
A commendable Finnish contribution
The locals’ perfect winning streak at the USDGC was preserved, as the 19-year-old world number one Gannon Buhr (-34) threw for the champion. Joona Heinänen and vitonen of the same ranking Niklas Anttila shared seventh place with a score of -24.
If the opening round was weak for Finns, the blue and white colors were found in the final results significantly higher: 17-year-old Eetu Tuominen (-15) shared the 17th place, and alsos Lenni Kemppainen (-10), Jesse Nieminen (-9) as well as Daniel Davidsson (-4) were included in financial positions and among the 50.
The top female professionals threw their traditional invitational competition during the USDGC holiday. Fresh world championi Eveliina Salonen led halfway through but softened over the weekend to third.
The competition season for professionals started in February and will end this coming weekend with the money-making finals of the DGPT tour.
