That is why meteorologists are needed right now

Erik Höjgård-Olsen believes that climate change means that the meteorology profession is increasingly important for Sweden. This is because it is increasingly important to be able to predict the weather as extreme weather becomes more common.

The Armed Forces also testify to an increased need for meteorologists, mainly defense meteorologists.

– The need is increasing in the Armed Forces at the same time as we have retirements and natural departures. We see a great need in the future, says the defense meteorologist Jonas Lilja to TV4 Nyheterna.

That’s how you become a meteorologist

As a meteorologist there are different roles to shoulder. For example, some work with conveying weather forecasts and warnings, while others work with climate research or specialize in the air environment, SMHI writes on its homepage.

In order to work as a meteorologist, you must complete a three-year bachelor’s degree in meteorology or physics. The education is bordered by large parts of mathematics, physics and meteorology. When you have finished your bachelor’s degree, a further two years of master’s degree in meteorology are required.
