She and her partner Per-Arne were on their way home to Norrbyn from the mountain cabin in Joesjö last Thursday when they had a great nature experience.
– We came and went and saw that the eagle was eating a large bird, probably a plover. We braked and then it stood and glared at us for a while. Then it tried to fly away with the dead bird, but couldn’t, says Anna Jonsson.
The eagle encounter occurred approximately at the height of Eriksberg west of Storuman.
The golden eagle is Sweden’s second largest bird, it can weigh up to six kilograms and have a wingspan of more than two meters. Michael Schneider, predator expert at the county administrative board in Västerbotten, states that golden eagles may still have difficulty flying away with prey as large as a grouse.
The sea eagle is even larger than the golden eagle.
– But on the other hand, it is a worse hunter, says Michael Schneider.
