Sarnia flooring company owner charged with fraud

A Sarnia man is charged after customers reported a flooring firm took deposits for flooring contracts and never followed through on the work, police say.

The owner of McMillan Flooring and More Inc., between May and June, provided false excuses for material and installation delays, ignored customer inquiries, and ultimately failed to deliver the ordered flooring, using the funds for personal gain, police said.

Victims, believing they were investing in their homes, suffered significant losses, police said.

Kevin McMillan, 33, of Sarnia, faces five counts of theft less than $5,000, five counts of fraud more than $5,000, and one count each of fraud and theft more than $5,000.

McMillan is scheduled in court Nov. 12.

Police offered tips to help prevent fraud when contracting home repair services, including:

  • Get multiple quotes and check references.
  • Verify licensing and insurance.
  • Get everything in writing.
  • Never pay in full upfront.
  • Be wary of high-pressure sales tactics.
  • Do your research.
