‘Suspicious’ Walpole blaze sends as many as three to hospital

A Walpole Island fire that sent as many as three people, including a firefighter, to hospital Wednesday night is being treated as suspicious, provincial police and fire officials say.

A structure fire was reported at a Chiefs Road North address on the First Nation around 8 pm, Lambton OPP said in a release Thursday afternoon.

Two residents “were removed from the house before the fire department arrived and transported to hospital,” with unknown injuries, Walpole Island Fire Department said on social media.

Police said one person in the house was taken to local hospital with serious injuries, and they weren;t aware of a second person.

A “loud explosion” occurred during fire suppression operations, the fire department added on social media. “Due to this explosion, a firefighter was sent to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.”

Other details, including a damage estimate, weren’t immediately available.

The fire is being treated as suspicious, said OPP, who are investigating with Walpole Island police and the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office.

The fire marshal investigates incidents including those involving death, injury, major property loss or of possibly suspicious cause.
