Gen Z suffers the most from this in open-plan offices, but the consequences affect millions of all ages

Not every problem is immediately obvious to outsiders. Younger people in particular suffer from something that can be found virtually everywhere.

What bothers young people? According to a survey by France’s largest financial daily, Les Echos, we have a problem with noise in the labor market. More than half of the participants say that noise at work affects their life and health.

What is noticeable is that the younger, the higher the proportion. Young people under the age of 34, most of whom belong to Gen Z, are the most stressed group. 64 percent complain about noise here. The older people get, the smaller the proportion becomes, but it remains at well over 50 percent.

Noise, the hidden scourge

Are all sectors affected equally? No, it’s easy to understand that the complaints from areas such as construction and industry outnumber those from retail, offices or service. But no matter which industry we look at, it is always more than half that suffers from noise. Even in an open-plan office, conversations, telephone rings, background noise or the overlapping clacking of keyboards are enough.

What are the health consequences of noise? There are studies on this and of course also information from the survey. The latter are:

  • Exhaustion and irritability, 60 percent
  • Stress, 50 percent
  • Discomfort, 37 percent
  • Sleep disorders and tinnitus, about a third each
  • Deafness, one in four
  • Studies by a research institute that the newspaper cites point to a danger posed by supposedly “normal conditions” in addition to the danger of loud noises such as those we find in construction or industry. Anyone who is exposed to a certain background noise that is perceived as stressful for hours may have to deal with the problems mentioned above.

The expert on well-being in the world of work, Romain Bendavid, describes noise in the world of work as follows (via euro.dayfr.com):

It is the hidden scourge of professional life

Despite all the problems, Generation Z has a special relationship with the office that is fundamentally different from that of previous age groups. Many of them started their professional lives during the pandemic or shortly before and therefore did not get to know normal working life. Now they are celebrating it: Generation Z is now finding a new reason to go from home to the office
