Tesla Elon Musks company presents the Cybercab its electric robot

It is the latest addition to the galaxy of autonomous cars. The Cybercab, Tesla’s electric robot taxi, with a futuristic look, was presented last night, Thursday October 10, in Los Angeles by Tesla owner and billionaire Elon Musk, from the Warner Bros studios, in public. With the promise of a car costing just over 27,000 euros, safer than those driven by humans, Musk has generated enthusiasm. However, the manufacturer still has a long way to go before offering taxis without drivers for the general public.

Tesla currently has no authorization to test its autonomous cars on the road network. Its driver assistance system has also been implicated in fatal accidents in the past. Nevertheless, Elon Muskthe boss of Tesla, hopes to manufacture his robot taxi on a large scale before 2027. An optimistic forecast, as he himself admitted during an event organized on the evening of October 10 by Tesla and broadcast on social networks .

In front of the company’s cameras and an audience of fans, Elon Musk traveled a few hundred meters in the Cybercab, the brand’s future autonomous taxi, on streets closed to traffic. The car, with ultra simple lines, is inspired by science fiction films.

Lagging behind the competition

However, despite the vehicle’s futuristic appearance, Tesla is lagging behind its competitors in the field of self-driving cars. Waymo, from Google, or even General Motors with its Cruise brand, already offer their services in some large American cities.

Some experts believe that we would have to wait until 2035 to see the emergence of a technology truly equivalent to the capabilities of a human driver. Cruise, whose services were suspended for five months from October 2023 after accidents, resumed service this year. But these new services are developing slowly under very specific security conditions, such as the intervention of a remote driver when the “autonomous” vehicle loses its bearings.
