European ministers speak of further tightening

Immigration is once again at the heart of European discussions. The Interior Ministers of the European Union (EU) debated a further tightening of migration policy on Thursday October 9 in Luxembourg. Some countries, like France or Germany, want to speed up the return of illegal migrants, others talk about “ return hubs », centers which accommodate illegal immigrants in third countries.

One thing is certain: after the recent electoral successes of the far right in Austria and in Germanythe issue of immigration dominates the European agenda. The interior ministers of twenty-seven states members engage in a real bidding war to determine who will propose the strictest measures.

Returns Hubs »

Hungary and Italy stand out with their “ returns hubs », centers located outside the European Union where irregular migrants would be returned. While Spain rejects this idea, France, through its Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleaudo not wish “ rule out any solution “. With Germany, it supports a proposal from the Netherlands – represented by a far-right minister – and Austria, aimed at accelerating the expulsions of illegal migrants.

Harden, intensify

This subject will also be discussed this Friday at the summit of the nine southern countries of the European Union in Cyprus, before the Twenty-Seven will look into it next week at the European summit in Brussels. Their objective: to further toughen the border controls and intensify expulsions of irregular migrants.
