The exact circumstances of Victoria Roshchyna’s death are not yet known, but kyiv confirmed the news through its center for coordination of prisoners of war affairs. According to the letter from the Russian Ministry of Defense received by her family this Thursday, October 10, the independent journalist died in captivity in Russia on September 19.

The 27-year-old journalist disappeared on August 3, 2023 after trying to reach, via Russia, the illegally occupied Ukrainian territories to continue her work there. Ukrainian intelligence claims that she was on a list of prisoners intended for an upcoming exchange between Ukraine and Russia, specifies our correspondent in kyiv, Emmanuelle Chaze. His transfer from Taganrog prison, in southwest Russia, to Moscow seems to confirm this.

In March 2022, while trying to travel to Mariupol, Victoria Roshchyna had already been arrested by the FSB and detained for ten days before being released. According to Reporters Without Borders, this is the thirteenth working Ukrainian journalist to be killed by Russia. The organization demands that an investigation shed light on the circumstances of his death.

In 2022, Victoria Roshchyna received the Courage in Journalism Award from the Global Foundation of Women Working in Media. She worked in particular for the Ukrainian titles Radio Liberté, Ukrainska Pravda And Hromadske.
