A small hotfix in World of Warcraft has spontaneously turned some players into millionaires – at least when they were online in time.
If you want to earn large sums of gold in World of Warcraft, you actually have to invest a lot of time or have a great understanding of the market. But last night there was a small hotfix that ensured that many players got millions of gold if they were careful at the right moment.

What happened? In The War Within there is the Desecrated Tinderbox resource, which is used for many recipes. This is a rare resource sometimes found in treasures or depths. The price of this tinder box has mostly been between 6,000 and 9,000 gold pieces in the past few days and demand has been high. Anyone who put a tinder box in the auction house could sell it almost immediately.
Blizzard felt that this resource was too rare and introduced a new method to purchase it via a hotfix last night. Two blacksmith supplies dealers in Dornogal now exchange the tinder box for different items:
The highlight: The materials mentioned above had a much, much lower value in the auction house. So you could buy kaheti oils for the ridiculous price of 3 gold – for example, 1,000 kaheti oils for 30,000 gold.
For these 1,000 kaheti oils you could then buy over 300 desecrated tinder boxes from the dealer and then put them in the auction house.
What happened then? Anyone who was on their toes and immediately noticed the hotfix announcement could buy the cheap materials and immediately exchange them for tinder boxes and put them back in the auction house before the market collapsed.
To stick with the example of 1,000 kaheti oils, you could turn 30,000 gold into 1,500,000 gold, as a friend captured on screenshots:
The whole thing could of course be scaled and some large investors probably filled the gold cap of 9,999,999 gold several times within a few minutes during the night – more easily than they have probably done for a long time.
Is that still possible now? No. Within minutes, the market had adjusted and prices normalized. Kaheti oils and all the other materials now cost significantly more, so that 3 of the “cheap” materials now roughly correspond to the price of a tinder box. Anyone who has not responded within a few minutes will no longer be able to benefit from it.
With that in mind, I would like to sincerely apologize to everyone who bought my tinder boxes last night for 5,000 gold before the price dropped to 1,700 gold a few seconds later. This should cover my repair costs for this extension.
Anyone who missed the moment yesterday now has to farm gold again in the classic way. But that’s pretty easy in The War Within.
