The thriller series The Chemistry of Death has come to Netflix and has dethroned the Menendez killers. With so much interest, the question naturally arises as to whether forensic pathologist David Hunter (Harry Treadaway) will return for a second season with new cases. There would definitely be enough material for a sequel.
After Netflix success: Will The Chemistry of Death get a second season?
The Chemistry of Death actually came to Germany for the first time a year and a half ago, when the thriller series was released on Paramount+. At that time, however, the British-German co-production was received very mixed and despite being a celebrated bestseller in this country, it only achieved a rating of 5.6 out of 10 points on Moviepilot, 56 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and 6.6 out of 10 points on IMDb.
Paramount+ did not publish any streaming figures at the time. Based on the ratings, the chances of Season 2 looked slim. In January 2024, Paramount+ removed the series completely from its own programming. At Easter the 6 episodes were shown on free TV on Das Erste. The Chemistry of Death is only now being released on Netflix new impetuswhich could mean we don’t have to write off a sequel entirely just yet.
There is still no official plans for season 2 – but no official removal either. After season 1 filmed the first two books of Simon Beckett’s David Hunter crime novels, the novel sequels are available for replenishment:
In addition to the previous six books, there is the short story Cat and Mouse * and author Simon Beckett revealed in the Moviepilot interview about Chemistry of Death that he was working on one seventh David Hunter volume writes who works on one “cold place” will play.
Season 2: What are the book sequels to The Chemistry of Death about?
Season 1 adapted the novel The Chemistry of Death in Episodes 1, 2 and the first half of Episode 3, in which David Hunter became a country doctor, but then ended up in a serial killer hunt with his special knowledge of corpses. The second part of episode 3 and episodes 4, 5 and 6 then filmed his island fall into a potential spontaneous combustion: cold ash. If Season 2 is ordered and the series sticks to the book order, we could expect the following cases.
Deathly pallor: Season 2 could send David Hunter to the real “body farm”.
In the third David Hunter book Corpse Pallor, which has the title Whispers of the Dead in the English original, the forensic pathologist struggles with his profession. He is at the end of Cold Ashes (and Season 1 of The Chemistry of Death) narrowly escaped being murdered by a serial killer and has to reorient itself.
But he can’t turn down an old friend’s request for help and therefore travels to the (real existing) Body Farm Institute in Knoxville, Tennessee, where pathologists study real decomposing bodies in the field. However, a body in a hunting lodge in the American Smoky Mountains that has been decomposed beyond recognition is decomposing faster than expected and based on the contradictory results, David stumbles into a new explosive case.
Chemistry of Death Season 2: Decay would revive an old case
In part 4 of the thriller series, Ververung or in English The Calling of the Grave, David Hunter takes us back to a previous case before The Chemistry of Death: The killer Jerome Monk once confessed Murders of four womenbut refused to reveal where their bodies were found. Eight years later the perpetrator escapes from prison to Dartmoor and only the forensic scientist may be able to stop him as fear spreads across the region. An ideal foggy setting for season 2?
Totenfang contrasts the fiery death from season 1 with a water corpse
The fifth novel Totenfang (The Restless Dead) gives David Hunter one Male corpse in the estuary from Essex investigate what poses special mysteries in the location where the water landscape was found. Between influential families, affair rumors and doubts about the identity of the decomposing person, the forensic investigator finds out that a foot found alone probably belongs to a second corpse.
The eternal dead are sniffing about season 2 of The Chemistry of Death
Book 6, The Scent of Death, introduces David disused hospital with a dark past. The abandoned building in London is actually supposed to be demolished as the attic is one Mummified corpse in plastic is discovered. The additional discovery of a hidden, bricked-up room suggests a larger conspiracy.
