Fake BankIDs are rampant – that’s how you recognize them

Fake BankIDs are rampant thats how you recognize them

An Ica store in Örebro no longer accepts BankID and Freja as identification, something that Nerikes Allehanda was the first to report. The store stopped accepting digital IDs on Thursday last week.

The reason is that the staff have had difficulty distinguishing fake e-identifications from real ones. The store is not interested in spending time checking the identity documents.

– It is already so pressed for time today, says one of the staff the newspaper.

BankID: “Check all ID documents carefully”

The store now only accepts physical passports, ID cards and driver’s licenses. At BankID, however, they believe that the risk of fake IDs in physical form is just as real as the risk of fake digital IDs.

– I also want to emphasize that problems with counterfeit physical ID cards also exist and therefore it is of the utmost importance to always verify and check all ID documents carefully, says Charlotte Patakypress officer at BankID, to News24.

When checking a digital ID, there are more details to check that the ID is real than what is on a plastic card, says Pataky. In addition, BankID has several guides on the website that show how to ensure that the e-identification is genuine.

BankID, Swish and Freja are apps that have been counterfeited

If it concerns age checks, as in the case in Örebro, BankID recommends scanning a QR code.

– It’s easy and smooth with another BankID app. The same information as on the ID card is then displayed. Be careful to check that the photo displayed matches the person showing the ID document. Just as should be done with physical ID cards.

BankID is not the only app that has been spoofed. Even the Freja app, which aims to authenticate people just like BankID, has had problems and the Swish app, something that Nyheter24 previously reported on.

– We are aware that there are fake ID cards and we are actively working with crime prevention authorities regarding this, says Pataky to Nyheter24.

BankID points out that the digital ID documents are secure and cannot be created without a valid Swedish passport or national ID card.

They are here to stay, says Pataky at BankID.

– Digital ID documents are here to stay and consumers want to leave their wallets at home.
