The cars with a ridiculously high malus – SEK 200,000 in tax

The cars with a ridiculously high malus SEK 200000

When the Bonus malus system was introduced in 2018, the idea was to reward cars, light trucks and light buses with low emissions with a bonus, and punish cars with high emissions through increased vehicle tax for the first three years.

The malus tax is affected by how many grams of carbon dioxide the car emits per kilometer. Anyone who wants to calculate the malus for different cars can do so at The Swedish Transport Agency.

Here are some of the car models with the highest malus tax.

One of the fastest cars in the world, with a gigantic W16 engine of a whopping 1,500 horsepower, is the Bugatti Chiron.

With a top speed of over 400 horsepower, it is unsurprising that the car emits horrendous amounts of carbon dioxide – more precisely 571 grams per kilometer.

There are currently no copies of the Bugatti Chiron registered in Sweden, but if someone were to buy one, the annual tax including malus would have landed at SEK 64,582. Calculated over three years, this means a total tax of SEK 194,556.

However, the new price is over SEK 30 million, so if you can afford to buy the car, you can probably also afford to pay the tax.

Engine: 8.0-liter W16
Performance: 1500 horsepower, 1600 newton meters
Weight: 1,978 kilos
Carbon dioxide emissions: 571 grams/km
Malus per year: SEK 64,582

Ram 1500 TRX – solid pickup truck with a big thirst

Extreme weight, extreme size and extreme weight. It is an effective recipe for malus maximization.

The Ram 1500 TRX is a large American pickup truck built to be fast off-road, and is therefore equipped with raised suspension and giant tires. Under the hood lurks a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 with over 700 horsepower, the power of which is sent to all four wheels.

This is enough for emissions of 422 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer. The tax including malus is SEK 44,914 a year, or SEK 134,742.

In recent years, many large pickup trucks have been registered as ethanol cars, which has meant that they easily escaped the Malus system. However, this loophole is now about to be closed.

Engine: 6.2-liter V8
Performance: 711 horsepower, 882 newton meters
Weight: 2,955 kilos
Carbon dioxide emissions: 422 grams/km
Tax per year: SEK 44,914

Mercedes-Benz S 680 GUARD – heavy car, heavy tax A car for the one with many enemies – Photo: Mercedes-Benz

Heavy cars with big engines are severely penalized by the malus system, and that description certainly fits the Mercedes S 680 GUARD.

The car is a heavily armored version of the Mercedes S-Class, aimed at customers who have more bodyguards than they can count on their two hands. The safety rating is VR10, which is the highest available for civilian cars and literally resists bullets, bombs and grenades.

The heavy armor ring means a curb weight of over four tons, and this combined with a large V12 under the hood means that the Malus is soaring. The normal tax and malus together amount to SEK 47,554 a year, or SEK 142,662 over three years.

Engine: 6.0-liter V12
Performance: 612 hp / 900 Nm
Weight: 4,200 kg
Carbon dioxide emissions: 442 grams/km
Tax per year: SEK 47,554

Diesel engines generally use less fuel than petrol engines, and thus emit less carbon dioxide. Diesel cars are still severely penalized by the malus system, as they also spew out substances that are bad for air quality.

One of the diesel cars that is punished the most is the off-road vehicle Ineos Grenadier, which has a 3.0 liter straight diesel and carbon dioxide emissions of 326 grams per kilometer. The result is a total annual tax, including malus, of SEK 32,242 or SEK 96,726 over three years.

Engine: 3.0-liter straight six, diesel
Performance: 286 horsepower, 450 newton meters
Weight: 2,811 kilos
Carbon dioxide emissions: 326 grams/km
Tax per year: SEK 64,582
