Usually discreet about her private life, Anne-Sophie Lapix spoke on the show C l’hebdo, la suite, on October 5. She talks about her role as caregiver to her husband Arthur Sadoun, affected by throat cancer in 2022.
In 2022, while she was already at the helm of the 8 p.m. news on France 2, Anne-Sophie Lapix also, during this same period, experienced a more personal ordeal. Her husband, the advertising executive Arthur Sadoun, was struck by throat cancer.
Become your spouse’s caregiver and “hold the shock by their side”
In the show “C the weekly, the rest“, Anne-Sophie Lapix tells how she supported her husband during this special moment. “When you have a loved one in this situation, it’s normal to be at their bedside and try to cope with the shock by their side” she explains. “It’s been a huge ordeal, obviously. You never expect it and you’re a little dizzy with the danger and the fear of losing someone.”
Although she admits to never having really thought the worst for her husband. “Afterwards, I never thought it was going to be fatal. But I actually saw him extremely affected, physically and morally” she confided. “But if I’m a fighter, with him we’re way above it! We have incredible strength of character!“.
A public announcement made in January 2023
A few months after learning of his cancer, Arthur Sadoun decided to make his illness public, in January 2023. The boss of Publicis wanted through this approach to raise awareness about the human papillomavirus (HPV) and to highlight people who work, during or after having been affected by the disease. He also launched at that time Working with Cancer, a group aiming to break taboos around illness at work.
Arthur Sadoun also knew that the illness would not be possible to hide, as he explained in a video for the media Brut. “I knew my body was going to change, I knew I wasn’t going to be able to travel anymore, so I decided to make it public.”
A “difficult” decision, particularly for fear of the judgment of certain people, who would interpret his words as an “act of weakness”. An opinion that his wife obviously does not share and which has been a real support for him. “My wife, my family, my loved ones supported my decision… So I did it!” he explained again.
Illness can break up a relationship, but also strengthen it
Arthur Sadoun is well aware of his wife’s unfailing support. “Anne-Sophie was incredible”he also declared at that time. If for her part, she refuses this qualifier, judging her presence alongside her husband as “normal”, this is not the case for all couples.
Living with a sick spouse, “it is not only supporting others in their physical pain, it is also living with their psychological suffering“Amélie Boukhobza explained to us in a previous article.”The illness creeps in everywhere, it becomes omnipresent, it takes up space, it invades the relationship. It is no longer just a love story, but a constant struggle, a daily challenge that can quickly transform the relationship into a real ordeal.
In the case of Anne-Sophie Lapix and Arthur Sadoun, married since 2010, their relationship has visibly strengthened through the ordeal of illness.
