“One of the great works of the year”: this 7-hour series by an Oscar-winning director is the event of the week

One of the great works of the year this 7 hour

A new series based on a psychological thriller carried by a 5-star cast can be discovered during the week in streaming. It caused a reaction from critics who discovered it in advance.

For several years now, television series have been of interest to directors and actors initially known for their cinematographic works. This week, a program that brings together big names in the seventh art (many of whom are Oscar winners) makes its streaming debut. Written and directed by Alfonso Cuaron (Gravity, Roma, Harry Potter 3…), Disclaimer is the adaptation of the novel Revealedwritten by Renée Knight.

It follows the personality of Catherine Ravenscroft, a famous, recognized and respected journalist, who one day receives a mysterious handwritten novel in her mailbox. By reading it, she discovers that she is the heroine, and that this work retraces her entire life, even her best kept secret.

Mysteries, secrets and criticism of the powerful therefore seem to be on the agenda for this highly anticipated series this year. And for the occasion, it was necessary to bring together an exceptional cast. It’s Cate Blanchett (The Lord of the Rings, Aviator, Carol…) who was chosen to play the protagonist of Disclaimer. She plays opposite Kevin Kline (A fish named Wanda), Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat), Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Power of the Dog), Louis Partridge (Enola Holmes), or Lesley Manville (The Crown).

If English-speaking criticism is not exactly unanimous, Disclaimer has nevertheless been widely recognized for its many qualities. It is mainly its narration in the form of a puzzle which seems to prevail and keep the viewer in suspense. On the social network

For Deadline, it is a “heartbreaking, beautiful and solidly traditional” series, while The Times praises its “exceptional storytelling about family dynamics and sexual jealousy”. Conversely, The Hollywood Reporter was not convinced by “the narrative sleight of hand”, judging “the story itself too superficial”, an opinion shared by The Telegraph.

Disclaimer is a series of seven episodes, each lasting approximately 45 minutes. Two episodes are posted online this October 11, before the rest is broadcast every Friday on a weekly basis until November 15. The series is broadcast exclusively on the Apple TV+ streaming platform, also accessible to MyCanal subscribers.
