Did you think you were doing the right thing by installing this new sea green carpet in your kitchen? Big mistake. We explain to you how it could harm your health.

For comfort or aesthetics, many of us want to put this object in our kitchen: the famous rug. A very bad idea, according to Dr. Gérald Kierzek, medical director of Doctissimo.

The carpet would absorb many liquids and debris

Unlike tiles or polished concrete, which are easily cleaned and require minimal maintenance, the carpet receives and absorbs all kinds of debris: crumbs, food residue, splashes of water or oil. Each passage makes it dirty and small everyday accidents (spilling a glass of water, dropping a few crumbs, etc.) leave traces.

Result ? The carpet is constantly exposed to dirt and becomes a perfect den for bacteria, fungi and mold (crumbs lodge in the fibers, while water or oil stains become embedded).

Carpets absorb liquids, which can encourage the proliferation of bacteria and mold from food: crumbs, liquids, cooking splashes, etc.“, confirms Dr. Gérald Kierzek.

The problem ? In the medium and long term, bacteria and mold can cause allergies, respiratory irritations and other health problems.

“Certain bacteria can be pathogenic (E. Coli) even if carpets are rarely licked. They therefore require regular maintenance to avoid the accumulation of dustdust mites and allergens. Additionally, spot cleaning can be complicated, especially if the rug is made of synthetic fibers that fade easily. recognizes the doctor.

    Beware of slipping!

Beyond the risk of infection, carpets can increase the risk of slipping, especially in high traffic areas or in an area where humidity is frequent – such as in a kitchen.

Indeed, when water accumulates on the surface, carpets can become very slippery and lead to sprains, fractures and head injuries.

Carpets can become slippery, especially when wet. This increases the risk of falls in an area where safety is paramount. Thick carpets can also create obstacles“, confirms Dr. Gérald Kierzek.

For all these reasons, the choice of carpet is important. But doing without it is also a very good idea!
