A new hospital working group will be led by Brantford city councilors Dan McCreary and Richard Carpenter.

Councilors supported creation of a working group, which will lead a grassroots effort in support of a new hospital proposed for the city. At a recent meeting, councilors also voted in favor of having McCreary serve as chair and Carpenter as vice chair of the working group.
“Ordinarily, the chairs and vice-chairs are elected by the committee (working group) membership,” McCreary said. “But we have a tight timeline on this and we do have members we hope will be appointed by other communities, which may take a bit of time.
“We’d like to get going on laying out a plan for this public campaign.”
The working group will advocate and support the Brant Community Healthcare System’s campaign to replace the aging Brantford General Hospital with a modern facility.

Plans call for the group to include elected and citizen representation from Brantford, Brant County, Six Nations and Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation.
In addition to helping with fund-raising initiatives, the working group will highlight the importance of a new hospital to all four communities.
Healthcare system officials have said the existing hospital’s infrastructure is old resulting in boiler breakdowns and a sink hole in a utility tunnel.
At the same time, Brantford and the surrounding area is one of the province’s fastest growing communities. A provincial Ministry of Finance has estimated that Brantford will grow by about 38 per cent over the next 25 years.
