The Anglo-Australian mining giant BHP faces this Monday a group of 700,000 plaintiffs who are demanding accountability following the failure of a dam in 2015. The collapse of the Fundão dam is considered Brazil’s worst environmental disaster.
Nineteen people lost their lives and villages were razed by a torrent of more than 40 million cubic meters. Not to mention the mining waste which ended up in rivers and the Atlantic Ocean.

BHP, the world’s largest mining company by stock market value, has consistently downplayed the impact of the case, saying it has already paid the necessary compensation.
All eyes are on the trial as it is the most ambitious move yet by foreign plaintiffs to bring class actions in England against London-listed companies.
