Baby Driver is probably the best-known getaway driver film of recent years, but you probably don’t know this one: The robust leading actor Frank Grillo makes it a much more rustic counterpart with a crisp 82 minutes. High gloss gives way to harsh reality in Wheelman by Jeremy Rush.
Wheelman is hidden deep in the Netflix offering and can be streamed there with a subscription.
That’s what the getaway driver action Wheelman on Netflix is all about
Wheelman (Frank Grillo) is framed as a getaway driver after a bank robbery. He receives contradictory instructions from his clients via the getaway car’s hands-free system. It quickly becomes clear: he was cheated. He sets off on brutal car journeys in search of his adversary.
90 percent of the time, Wheelman doesn’t leave his car. He simply doesn’t have time to walk and it’s safer in a car in a hail of bullets anyway. This makes the film incredibly exciting – we only see as much as the titular driver. Claustrophobia, but also closeness to the main character, who is in constant stress, brings beads of sweat to your forehead as you watch. Wheelman continually receives new information via his hands-free system. He has to act quickly and neither he nor we have time to breathe.
Thanks to Frank Grillo, Wheelman is the wicked baby driver and a robust one-man show
Baby Driver by Edgar Wright and Wheelman were released in the same year: 2017. The young Ansel Elgort gives way to the angular Frank Grillo, who unfairly never got any major leading roles. However, he plays the much more realistic getaway driver. Wheelman is the tough one adult version of Hollywood gloss of a baby driver. There’s no babyface here, just beards and raspy voices. In Wheelman, Grillo gets to demonstrate all of his skills in an almost one-man show.
In addition to a great Frank Grillo, the Kammerspiel is a real eye-catcher. Everything is tight: the streets, the time and the getaway car, which is almost the only thing you see. Wheelman promises concentrated action in a small space. Chamber plays of this kind have become a genre of their own and Wheelman doesn’t have to hide behind exciting colleagues like Nicht Auflegen!, Locke or Pontypool.
The concentrated getaway driver action guarantees you 82 minutes of excitement with Frank Grillo and streams on Netflix.
