Almost 230 dead as a result of Hurricane Helene in

Tropical Storm Milton is being warned to strengthen into a hurricane and is forecast to approach Florida next week.

In the United States, at least 227 people have died as a result of Hurricane Helene, officials said on Saturday local time.

About half of the victims are from North Carolina. In addition, the hurricane led to deaths in the states of South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee and Virginia.

Helene made landfall as a category four hurricane in Florida more than a week ago.

In terms of casualties, Helene is the deadliest hurricane to hit the US mainland since 2005, when Hurricane Katrina killed nearly 1,400 people.

The number of victims is feared to rise even further.

The southeastern parts of the United States are still recovering from Helene, while the next potential hurricane is already gaining strength in the Gulf of Mexico.
