ABSTENTION. The abstention rate in the first round of the presidential election stands at 26% according to data from the Ministry of the Interior published this Monday, April 11 the day after the election.
[Mis à jour le 11 avril 2022 à 13h22] The official abstention figures have fallen. If the Ministry of the Interior should confirm this data, the publication of the complete results of the 1st round of the presidential election makes it possible to find the rate recorded at the end of the ballot: the rate of abstention during the first round of the election presidential 2022 therefore stands at 26.31% according to the services of Place Beauvau. Sunday evening, the estimates on abstention gave a very close score: 27% according to Elabe for BFM TV. As a reminder, the abstention rate was 22.23% during the first round of the last presidential election in 2017.
What were the abstention figures at 5 p.m.?
At 5 p.m. this Sunday, April 10, 2022, abstention stood at 35% (participation at 65%) according to figures communicated by the Ministry of the Interior. This figure was higher than previous presidential elections up to 2002. Abstention figures varied by region. The lowest abstention rate at 5 p.m. was in the Dordogne, where the figure stands at “only” 24.74%. Conversely, the bad students at 5 p.m. are Haute-Corse (48.77% abstention), Seine-Saint-Denis (48.29%) and Paris (47.83%).
Abstention figures at noon
The first abstention figures were recorded this Sunday, April 10 during the first round of the 2022 presidential election. The Ministry of the Interior communicated on the level of participation: at noon, the abstention rate is thus 74.52% in France, a figure to be compared with the first round of this same presidential election in 2017: 71.46%. This level of abstention is high, but it will obviously decrease throughout the day. As with every election, the services of Place Beauvau, which are in charge of the organization and the proper conduct of the ballot, give updated rates of participation and abstention at 5 p.m. and then at 8 p.m. Later in the night, the level of abstention is consolidated with final figures, once all the data from the polling stations has been tallied.
What was the abstention rate in the 2017 presidential election?
Five years ago, had the French massed in the polling stations? No. In 2017, the first round of the presidential election was marked by a high level of abstention. 10,578,455 voters had not slipped a ballot on April 23, representing more than one in five (22.23%). It was also the largest number of “votes” counted, far ahead of Emmanuel Macron who came first (8,656,346). In the second round, it was not a record abstention rate but a record number of abstainers that was recorded with 12,101,366 voters who did not choose between Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen.
An “anti-abstention plan”
Abstention was one of the important data of this presidential election and this first round. To fight against abstentionism, the government had mobilized many means by deploying an “anti-abstention plan” at the end of February. If the objective was initially to encourage as many people as possible to register, a digital campaign was carried out with a video made by Quentin Deronzier, influencer with 100,000 subscribers on Instagram, and only broadcast on social networks . In addition, which has become one of the usual symbols everywhere, a QR Code has been added to each voter’s card. By scanning it, the voter discovers all the practical information relating to the election. Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter or even TikTok have pledged to carry out awareness campaigns to encourage people to vote.
