The center for German space travel, DLR, and the European space agency ESA are behind the facility. The hall is filled with 900 tons of sand as well as various rocks and craters to recreate the surface of the moon.
In addition to astronauts from all over the world being able to practice here, various developers will also be able to test new equipment to see how they stand up against the extreme conditions of the moon.
– It is important because we want things to go wrong on Earth before they do on the moon, says one of the project leaders, Juergen Schulz.
ESA hopes the facility will be able to help European astronauts get to the moon via Nasa’s Artemis programme, which plans to take humans to the moon again in the coming years.
