The new MMORPG Throne and Liberty was released yesterday. Even though the reviews on Steam are mixed, it seems to be well received by the community of MMORPG players on PS5 and Xbox, as initial comments on reddit show.
This is what people thought about Throne and Liberty in advance:
Throne and Liberty has had a difficult development history. The game was announced in 2011 and was actually supposed to lead the Korean MMORPG giant NCSoft out of the crisis around 2016 as “Lineage Eternal”. The MMORPG was planned as a hybrid for PC and mobile. At that time they were already well on their way, had started the PR campaign and were actually about to have a worldwide release.
But the game didn’t really work in playtests back then. NCSoft also had big hits with pure mobile games and so they put Throne and Liberty back into development and finally developed it as a game for PC and consoles. It started in South Korea in 2023 and here on October 1, 2024.
In South Korea, where consoles don’t play a role at all, Throne and Liberty had mixed results. Therefore, expectations here in the West were low. And many PC gamers also seem to be cautious about the game at first.
“The consoles urgently needed a new MMORPG”
Who likes the game? There are some really enthusiastic comments about the game on reddit.
One user says: After just an hour he had the feeling that the game was going to ruin his future. He just thinks it’s great that you can teleport seamlessly. The story is okay, but above all the world is so beautiful and so is the music. He’s heard a lot of bad things about the game, but he really enjoys it.
Another reddit user says: Throne on Liberty feels great, especially on the console. He has the feeling that he will play ESO or Black Desert Online again when it is released. The consoles urgently needed a new MMORPG – all other games were already 10 years old.
Another player also says that the MMORPG works better with a controller than with a mouse and keyboard.
There are also some veterans who rave about Throne and Liberty primarily as a “nostalgia kick” because the game reminds them a lot of Lineage 2.
What people seem to really enjoy is that Throne and Liberty is so busy at release and has that “New MMORPG” experience, with so many players logging in and out at the same time.
In another thread on reddit, people believe: Throne and Liberty is the best MMORPG for the Steam Deck, other MMORPGs like WoW or Final Fantsay XIX are rather frustrating with the Steam Deck, but Throne and Liberty runs great.
Reaction from PC gamers to Throne and Liberty rather muted
Is there also another voice? A relatively large number of readers on MeinMMO are rather disappointed with the game. You can already see problems with Pay2Win or simply describe the game as “total garbage”.
A reader from MeinMMO complains that the game shows that it was originally planned for mobile.
User Nexus1611 says he downloaded Throne and Liberty for the PS5, found the game completely overloaded and didn’t even make it past the tutorial.
Many also criticize the mixed situation with the servers.
This is what lies behind it: Throne and Liberty is actually the first “big MMORPG” for PlayStation 5 and Xbox since Black Desert came to the older generation in 2019.
Amazon is taking a little wind out of its own sails here – because New World was actually planned as a big release for the consoles.
In any case, the game seems to be polarizing. A lot of people look at a free2play game with good graphics first, even people who don’t actually have any interest in MMORPGs and grind, games from South Korea in particular are not made for our taste.
But some players seem to be totally indulging in the honeymoon feeling of a new MMORPG releasing and are excited about how much is going on in the game. If you want to find out more about the MMORPG Throne and Liberty, you’ve come to the right place at MeinMMO: Throne and Liberty has a mixed start and is only 55 percent positive on Steam
