The exchange of words was fierce in a crisis meeting of the UN Security Council.
Israel’s UN envoy asked what a country would do if it was hit by a “rain of robots”.
Iran’s UN ambassador in turn accused Israel of genocide and violations of Iran’s sovereignty.
The UN Security Council in New York convened on Wednesday for a crisis meeting on developments in the Middle East. Ahead of the meeting, Israeli UN Ambassador Danny Danon attacked Iran.
– Iran’s mask has finally fallen, the regime can no longer hide in the shadows or behind its supporters, said the UN ambassador.
– After the terrible attack on ten million civilians in Israel, the regime in Iran had the audacity to write to the UN Security Council and say that it acted in accordance with international law in attacks on military targets – and that any response from Israel would be against the law .
“Sovereignty violated”
Iran’s UN ambassador Amir Saeed Iravan said Israel has “violated Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in the past month”. He also pointed to the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniya who was in Tehran in July.
– Israel has also attacked Iran’s mission in Syria, continued the UN ambassador and accused the Security Council of not having condemned the attack when leading commanders in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard were killed.
Iran also attacked the US, saying the “genocide” in Gaza is being carried out with US bombs.
Guterres: Time almost up
The US has not sent the same warning signals to Israel to carry out a retaliation as in the case of the Iranian robot attacks six months ago. But late Wednesday, President Joe Biden announced that he does not support an Israeli attack on Iran’s nuclear energy facilities in retaliation for Iran’s drone strikes.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres summed up the opening of the meeting:
– The ravaging fires in the Middle East are quickly becoming an inferno. Time is running out.
