As of 2027, it is a legal requirement that waste must be collected close to the property, but already this spring Uppsala municipality will replace all containers for 30,000 households.
The new containers – which are 20 centimeters larger in both length and depth – will have sorting in the bin itself.
There, food waste, paper packaging, metal packaging, residual waste (also called “burnable”), plastic packaging and colored and uncolored glass packaging must be placed in each compartment.
– Today, 60-70 percent of residual waste is thrown away incorrectly, which is very unnecessary, says Anna Hjerne at Uppsala Water and Waste.
– It’s only things that don’t belong in the other compartments that should be there, for example diapers and old plastic things that aren’t packaging.
They look a lot bigger than today’s bins – will people fit this?
– If your plot is cramped, you need to review the location.
The new bins are paid for by the packaging manufacturers and everyone affected by the mandatory change will receive information sent home.
