The new Ryan Murphy series The Beauty tells a contemporary sci-fi story
The focus of the science fiction series The Beauty is the beauty craze, as Ryan Murphy revealed to the industry publication Variety:
It’s a medical sci-fi show about a new one Virus that mutates and is sexually transmitted, transforming you into your absolutely perfect self. And the question is, how far would you go to be beautiful? What would you sacrifice for it and does it matter?
The model is the “weight loss injection” Ozempic, which is not only very popular in Hollywood. Murphy says:
This series is about the so-called Ozempic culture. A small injection and you look and feel better and all your problems are gone. But what are you really working on? What’s wrong with you that makes you feel like you have to do this? Sometimes it’s health, sometimes it’s vanity.
The basis for the eleven-episode series is a comic series by Jeremy Haun and Jason A. Hurley, the synopsis of which is as follows:
In the world of The Beauty, physical perfection is attainable. The vast majority of the population has taken advantage of this, but Detectives Foster and Vaughn will soon discover that this comes at a terrible price.
Thematically, the story is reminiscent not only of the Demi Moore film The Substance, which is currently in cinemas, but also of the Netflix production Ugly. However, The Beauty’s financial framework seems to be much larger.
