When we sat down in the Moviepilot editorial team at the half-year mark to choose the best films of 2024 so far, a title quickly emerged that even mega-blockbusters like Dune: Part Two couldn’t hold a candle to: Challengers – Rivals. The sports drama opened in German cinemas at the end of April.

A little more than five months later, the film is announced as a flat rate on Amazon Prime Video. In six days you can stream the latest work by Call Me by Your Nane director Luca Guadagnino with a subscription. await you 131 nerve-racking minutes full of tennis, unspoken feelings and much more.

Challengers is the best film of the year so far – and you’ll soon be able to stream it with a subscription on Amazon Prime

At first glance, Challengers looks like an ordinary sports film. We spend a lot of time on the tennis court, follow tournaments and experience the promotion and relegation of the players. However, it quickly becomes clear: Tennis is just the surface here. With every energetic beat, the characters’ relationships are renegotiated.

Challengers: Rivals – Trailer 2 (German) HD

Challengers translates the rivalry in sports to a love triangle between three professionals who deal with their Ambitions and desires get in the way. Art (Mike Faist) and Patrick (Josh O’Connor) are actually best friends. But when they meet the laid-back Tashi (Zendaya), everything suddenly changes.

Guadagnino stages Challengers as a gripping epic full of torn feelings and the uncomfortable question of whether love isn’t just a sport that’s about scoring points and winning. When do the characters meet? beyond their ambition honestly look into your eyes and do you even know how it works?

A great desire lies dormant in this film and charges even the most inconspicuous gesture with a meaning that can destroy a friendship in a split second. At times the film feels like a psychological thriller not least because of the driving score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (The Social Network).
