Looking for a legal basis
As recently as yesterday (Monday), the parties disagreed on the issue, but now LKAB wants to see if it is possible to decommission the eastern Malmberget.
In order for LKAB to be able to decommission eastern Malmberget, however, permission is required. There is not currently, and therefore LKAB now wants to call on the authorities to review the situation.
Since 2022, the company has offered residents in eastern Malmberget to sell their properties at market value in Gällivare to enable those who wish to move. So far, 32 out of 144 homeowners have taken that offer and received financial compensation.
