The basic idea: Star Trek captain Chris Pine has to save his daughter from the clutches of an evil ruler. The actual story: An ex-bard (Pine) and thief breaks out of prison with his partner, a barbarian (Michelle Rodriguez).
He meets a magician with no talent (Justice Smith) and a druid (Sophia Lillis): together they want to rob the fraudulent villain (Hugh Grant) who stole all the loot from the heist that put them behind bars. The only problem is that the traitor is in cahoots with dark forces. The evil one also takes care of the thief’s daughter, who is not entirely disappointed in her father’s caring capacity for good reason.
Far too few have seen the cute adventure in the cinema
Box office results say nothing about the quality, which Dungeons & Dragons proves once again. The supposed blockbuster fell short of expectations at the box office and in Germany it didn’t even come close to the one million ticket mark. This is a big Hollywood film that seems well thought out from start to finish instead of collapsing in the third act under CGI clouds and sequel preparations.
Compared to many blockbuster spectacles from recent years, Dungeons & Dragons provides variety with its downright old-fashioned entertainment strategy. The adventure may not revolutionize blockbuster cinema, but there is nothing wrong with a solidly made fantasy hit with heart and humor.
Is Dungeons & Dragons 2 coming?
It is still uncertain whether Dungeons & Dragons 2 will come. Paramount CEO Brian Collins revealed to Variety last year that a sequel would only be conceivable if the budget was significantly reduced.
The good thing about Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, however, is that the film can stand on its own and offers a satisfying ending – sequel or not.
