The sight of the exotic sole on Öland made the ornithologists jump for joy.

Ornithologist Christian Cederroth tells P4 Kalmar about the unusual sighting:

– It is completely crazy. We just stood and screamed and jumped up and down for joy.

The brown tern was first noted in Sweden in November 2021 and usually breeds on tropical islands in the Atlantic, Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean.

Later, the same brown sole was seen at Ottenby in southern Öland. Things were about to end badly there.

A sea eagle attacked, but the sole came loose. The eagle then went on a renewed attack and had the brown sole in its claws. But it managed to break free again and dived. Finally the sea eagle gave up.

– The sole seems to have survived, miraculously enough, says Christian Cederroth.
