Over time, Son Goku had several masters who trained him in various fighting techniques. Perhaps the most iconic remains the Turtle School’s master, Muten Roshi. As an ordinary person, he didn’t have much to do after the original series, but in the Dragon Ball Super manga he was able to show how strong he actually is.
Spoiler alert: The following post talks about events in the Tournament of Power in both the Dragon Ball Super anime and manga.
What is it about? The Tournament of Power was an exciting event for many Dragon Ball fans. It was the final arc of Dragon Ball Super and pitted multiple universes against each other. In the team of our well-known Z-Warriors there were pretty normal faces.
The biggest surprise was probably Muten Roshi. The teacher at the turtle school hasn’t fought for a long time because, as an ordinary human, he hardly has a chance against beings like Buu or Cell.
But in the tournament of strength he showed that he still has what it takes at over 300 years old. In the anime, he managed to take out several opponents by dispatching them using technique and cunning rather than relying on pure combat power. However, if you haven’t read the Dragon Ball Super manga, you will have missed a short fight that makes the old man seem even more impressive.

Muten Roshi against one of the strongest opponents of all time
What happens in the manga? As in the anime, Muten Roshi also fights in the manga against opponents who should actually be stronger and even kicks them out of the tournament. In Chapter 39 of the manga, we see how Goku has no chance against Jiren, even in Super Saiyan Blue. Goku then talks about how he needs to get even stronger.
Muten Roshi contradicts him and says that martial arts is not about winning fights, but about mastering yourself. To prove to him that it’s not just about pure strength, he sprints towards Jiren. Jiren, of course, attacks.
But the impressive thing is that Muten Roshi can dodge Jiren’s attacks. Jiren and even Beerus are shocked at how well the old master moves. Beerus even suggests that it is similar to the Ultra Instinct.
Muten Roshi is ultimately thrown out by Jiren because he can’t defeat him either, but he shows Goku that it’s also the moves that matter and not just the new form you achieve. Throughout the Tournament of Power, Muten Roshi showed how important experience is, after all, in the anime he kicked more opponents out of the tournament than Krillin or Tenshinhan.
The community is divided
How was the scene received by the community? This fight is not always received positively within the community, as it leads to the power level Ad Absurdum. However, a common argument for Jiren is the rules of the tournament, as AurelGuthrie notes on reddit.
You weren’t allowed to kill opponents in the tournament, which also made it difficult for characters like Hit. Accordingly, Jiren had to hold back so as not to accidentally kill Muten Roshi. Another argument would be Jiren’s arrogance. Like other opponents, he underestimated Muten Roshi.
In principle, one can also criticize that it should actually be impossible for Roshi to avoid the attacks. After all, Jiren is faster than Hit and it is mentioned that he is stronger than some Gods of Destruction.
