And then there are Josh Brolin and Richard Jenkins as law enforcement officers.

Why Flirting with Disaster is worth it

The ’90s were the heyday of American independent cinema, which, with its playground of ideas and possibilities, gave birth to the likes of Quentin Tarantino, Steven Soderbergh and Richard Linklater. David O. Russell belongs to this generation. With Flirting with Disaster he presented an indie-style screwball comedy, full of Hollywood celebrities, but fresh and fresh. Contemporary critics also recognized this. Roger Ebert wrote about the film at the time:

Flirting with Disaster has the kind of confidence the genre demands. Russell finds the strong central line with which all screwball films begin, the seemingly serious mission or task, and then throws darts at a map of the United States as he creates his characters. […] One of the other virtues of Flirting with Disaster is that we can’t predict the film’s next twist. There are conventions in this kind of story, and Russell seems to violate most of them. […] It’s great fun to watch.

At the San Francisco Chronicle, Edward Guthmann summarized the premiere:

What follows is a lively, picaresque farce brimming with silly energy enough ideas, jokes and set pieces for three films of this type.

So if you like the humor in films like Silver Linings or want to enjoy Ben Stiller in one of his early roles, then you shouldn’t miss Flirting with Disaster.
