NBA basketball legend Dikembe Mutombo has died of brain cancer at the age of 58.

Born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo Dikembe Mutombo was one of the sport’s biggest stars during his NBA career from 1991-2009. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor two years ago.

– Mutombo was simply a larger than life character. On the field, he was one of the best shot blockers and defensive players in league history. Off the court, he was a heartfelt helper of other people, the NBA tweeted about the 218-centimeter sports personality.

– No one else would have been more suitable to serve as the league’s first world ambassador.

Mutombo, who has played in the NBA All-Star Game eight times, was elected to the NBA Hall of Fame in 2015.
